The Future of Pinoy Rock is Here.

The Future of Pinoy Rock is Here.

Blame it on KC Montero for categorizing Cueshe and Hale under the Pogi Rock genre.

Blame it on them for being so damned annoying. Especially Cueshe. Stupid lyrics, unoriginal riffs, stupid lyrics, “pogi” band members, and stupendously stupid lyrics. Really, I’m having a hard time writing this: having thought back on their stupid songs (read: ALL of their songs to hit the airwaves) had my brain reduced to mush.

Remember JCS band? That collaboration by John Prats, Carlo Aquino, and Stefano Mori? I think they pioneered the whole Pogi Rock thing. If only Mark Anthony, Jomari, and Eric picked up their instruments back then, they’d be the first, the baddest ever Pogi Rock band. But no, it had to be JCS.

6CycleMind is one of the trickier bands to categorize under the Pogi Rock label. To be called a Pogi Rock band, it’s been said that you have to be two things: one, pogi, and two, a rock band. They only meet one of those criteria.

Then we have these actor-led bands: Jeans (fronted by Jericho Rosales) and Kollide (vocals by Carlo Aquino). Two words: they suck. Third word: BAD.

Spongecola and Callalily probably are the best from this pool of Pogi Rockers. Come to think of it, if only the whole genre stepped up their standards to meet these two bands’ level of quality, Pogi Rock wouldn’t be that bad at all. In fact, should that happen, the whole Pogi Rock scene would probably get that good-looks-meet-rocking-out acknowledgment they’re still not being accorded up to this day.

It’s a good thing that decent groups have reemerged from the dark to take some of that popularity from Pogi Rock. Bands such as Kjwan, Pupil, Urbandub, Bamboo, and Wolfgang have taken action, and the whole local music scene’s become a whole lotta rosier, rockier place again.

Now, if only Rico Blanco would choose which side to rock for.

John: Nagpapaniwala ka sa mga ‘yon, malamang binayaran lang ‘yon ng gitarista para sabihing gwapito siya!
