Watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine last night with friends. It was a must-see for me because Wolverine’s one of my favorite Marvel characters, and I wanted a piece of his film history. I forgot to keep one thing in mind entering the theater, though: the X-Men series on film is notoriously good at messing up character histories because they follow their own canon, a universe apart from the already confusing comic book timelines and arcs. Thus, there’s the need to digest this movie on its own, as it is.

Four interesting WTF movie moments:

1. Daniel Negreanu playing poker with Gambit. It would have sucked if I was right; the scene played with the audience expecting to see Gambit, and the first recognizable face on the screen is Negreanu! “Fuck, Daniel Negreanu’s Gambit?” was the first thing that came to mind. I was thankful I was wrong.

2. Wolverine names Blob. Okay, Frederick J. Dukes is the mutant Blob. But it wasn’t Logan who named him! “Bub?” “Blob?” Sorry, I don’t know who else finds this funny, but it really cracked me up.

3. Hugh Jackman jumps butt-naked down a waterfall, streaks across a barn. It’s self-explanatory. Who the hell doesn’t find these couple of scenes funny?

4. Logan loses his memories to a headshot. Shooting adamantium bullets into Logan’s skull is a cheap shot. They should have pushed through with brainwashing him back in the laboratory, while bonding the metal to his body. Shooting him in the head is a too-convenient-way to erase his memories.

Interesting film. If you’re a fan, that is.
